The APCC lead for road safety, Alison Hernandez, has welcomed the publication of an independent strategic assessment of road safety commissioned by the Government and re-confirms the offer from Police and Crime Commissioners to work with Government to cut the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

The independent Road Safety Management Capacity Review, released today by the Department for Transport, sets out a wide range of opportunities for strengthening joint working across local and national partners to improve road safety.

“Today’s publication is a helpful overview of the current approach to road safety across England and Wales. It provides a thorough assessment of the many different factors influencing road safety management and should play an essential part in steering the Government’s refreshed road safety action plan which will focus on young people, rural road users, motorcyclists and older vulnerable users

“Police and Crime Commissioners offer their support in working with Government to bring about the essential improvements that are needed to make our roads safe for everyone.  As directly elected representatives of our communities, PCCs have a crucial role to play in responding to the concerns of their communities and holding partners to account for the delivery of services.  On behalf of PCC’s I shall be writing to both the DfT and Home Office offering our support and outlining the contribution PCC’s can make to this important area.”

Today’s publication follows the Government’s road safety announcements earlier this month to update the statement and action plan on road safety. Ministers have also recently announced major investments in road safety engineering projects across England and Wales, the launch of a competition inviting innovation in the design of road side breathalysers and to commission a study by the RAC Foundation to better understand the cause of road traffic collisions.
