Rape victims can refuse to let detectives harvest phone data

Scottish rape victims can refuse police requests to rip data from mobile phones and devices without the threat of their complaint being dropped, Police Scotland’s chief constable has confirmed. Iain Livingstone distanced himself from a consent form used by police in England and Wales warning accusers “it may not be possible for the investigation or prosecution to continue” if they refuse to hand over their phones, computers and smart watches.

Glasgow MSP tells Nicola Sturgeon city sex crime increase must be tackled

More resources for police and victim support groups are needed to tackle an increase in sexual crimes in Glasgow, an MSP has said. Johann Lamont, Glasgow Labour MSP raised an Evening Times report showing sex offences in the city had doubled, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. Ms Lamont told the First Minister the paper reported the rise which she said were cause for “grave concern”. She said “The figures revealed in the Evening Times are deeply concerning and the Scottish Government has a responsibility to act.

Over 100 Police Scotland officers readied for European elections

More than 100 police officers are being deployed to ensure public safety during the European elections. Deputy Chief Constable Will Kerr told a meeting of the Scottish Police Authority (SPA) that following Brexit, the security situation is now “fundamentally different” to what it’s been in the past. He said: “Tomorrow, during the European elections, we’ve had to stand up four Police Support Units, that’s over 100 cops. We would have never normally done that in the past. We would never normally have needed that level of support, particularly for European elections. We do now – the tone is just fundamentally different.”

Scotland spending £300k A WEEK on extra cops to get ready for Brexit

Police Scotland is spending more than £300,000 a week on extra officers who have been taken on to help the force prepare for Brexit , the chief constable has revealed. Iain Livingstone said the decision to leave the European Union had been an “unprecedented and unforeseen cost pressure on policing”. He told watchdogs at the Scottish Police Authority (SPA) that 90 new officers were taken on in February. With the UK originally due to leave the European Union on March 29, the chief constable said previously announced plans to reduce operational numbers within the force by 300 were being scrapped.
