Eligibility

The scope of the Windrush Compensation Scheme is not limited to men and women who originally came to the UK from the Caribbean Commonwealth. Almost everyone originally from a Commonwealth country who arrived before 1 January 1973 is included.

If you have a right of abode or settled status (or are now a British citizen) and arrived to live in the UK before 31 December 1988 you will also be eligible to apply regardless of your nationality when you arrived – even if you are not a Commonwealth citizen.

The scheme is also open to:

  • children and grandchildren of Commonwealth citizens in certain circumstances
  • the estates of those who are now deceased but who would have otherwise been eligible to claim compensation
  • close family members of eligible claimants where there has been a significant impact on their life or where there is evidence of certain direct financial costs

  • detention and removal
  • housing
  • health
  • education
  • driving licences
  • banking
  • impact on normal daily life

How to claim

How to claim depends on who you are and if you are in the UK or overseas.

If you are claiming for yourself

Read the Windrush compensation claim form: guidance (PDF, 705KB, 45 pages) before you apply.

You will need to download and complete the Windrush compensation claim form (web accessible) (PDF, 191KB, 1 page) .

To edit the form you will need to download a recent version of Adobe Reader.

You must save the form to your PC or device and open it using Adobe Reader instead of your web browser.

You can also download and complete the standard Windrush compensation claim form (PDF, 401KB, 18 pages) .

If you are a close family member

Where to send your form and documents

Send your completed form, copies or scans of your identity document (for example, your passport) and supporting evidence either by:

  • post: Windrush Compensation Scheme, PO BOX 3468, Sheffield, S3 8WA, UK – if you are outside the UK

You can contact the Windrush contact centre by email or telephone if you need a form sent to you by post.

If you are emailing your claim form and supporting documents there is a limit on the size of files that can be attached. If you go over this limit your email could be automatically rejected. We will accept multiple emails for each claimant.

What happens next

After you submit your claim, we will contact you to confirm that we have received it.

If your claim is successful, we will contact you with a compensation offer.

We will consider each claim based on the information provided. Whether you receive a payment, and how much, will depend on the details of your claim.

Windrush engagement events

The Home Office is running a series of public events around the country to raise awareness of the Windrush Compensation Scheme and the work of the Windrush Taskforce. These events are open to everyone of any nationality.

Home Office staff also present regularly at events set up by external community organisations for the same purpose.

At all events, information is provided on who may be eligible for the Windrush Compensation Scheme, what kinds of losses and impacts it covers and how to apply. There is also an opportunity to ask questions.

Locations for future events will be published here shortly.

Funding for events

The Home Office has funding available for future events. If you are a registered charity or recognised community group and you want to organise an event to communicate the Windrush Scheme and Compensation Scheme to people in your networks and communities, you can apply for this funding.

Funding is available for venue hire, light refreshments and other associated costs such as projector screens.

Your event should meet the following criteria:

  • to increase awareness of the Windrush Taskforce, the Compensation Scheme and claimant assistance available; and encourage eligible people to apply for compensation

A representative from the Home Office will be invited to give a short presentation at the event and respond to questions.

  • it must be open to all members of the public

The Home Office will prioritise funding for events in locations that have not previously held similar events, or with communities who have not yet been reached through such events.
