Guidance: Secure schools

The ‘How to Apply’ guidance sets out the process to follow to make an application to run the first Secure School, and the criteria that all applications would be assessed against.

The application window for the first secure school closed on 1 March 2019. Following a rigorous assessment process, which included a written application and an interview with officials from the Ministry of Justice, the Youth Justice Board, Youth Custody Service, the Department for Education and NHS England & NHS Improvement, we are pleased to announce that Oasis Charitable Trust has been chosen as the UK’s first secure school operator, and will now be taken forward to the pre-opening stage.

Applications were also received from:

  • Diagrama Foundation Psychosocial Intervention
  • The Limes College
  • Shaw Trust
  • The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust

In keeping with our commitment to be as transparent as possible, we will aim to publish the application submitted by Oasis Charitable Trust by September 2019.
